The Windham Orchestra: The professional and amateur musicians of the Windham Orchestra present between 5 and 10 concerts annually. We celebrate the richness of musical talent in our area with programs featuring local musicians and composers, under the banner Listen Local.
Community orchestras are the grass roots of the culture of art music. The Windham Orchestra takes pride in its history of 39 years of providing symphonic music to our small community of 13,000 people in southeastern Vermont, in its commitment to new music and in its school and outreach program, keeping classical music vital and building future audiences.
Our 2008-2009 season ended on May 2, 2009 with a wonderful musical trip to Germany: we performed Wagner's Prelude to Die Meistersinger, Haydn's Cello Concerto in C, and Schumann's Fourth Symphony in Saxtons River and in Putney. It takes a lot to run an orchestra, and we are grateful for the time and effort of our members and our audience.
Listen Local Day: January 25, 2009 was proclaimed LISTEN LOCAL DAY
by Brattleboro Town Select Board in recognition and valuing the role of music, and the Windham Orchestra, to inspire, stimulate and support the physical, emotional and financial health of our community.
Film Scores: One of the pieces on our January 25, 2009 "Listen Local" concert was Steven Bathory-Peeler's "Film Score for an Unmade Film," with an added dimension of audience participation: the composer invites the audience to write down ideas for a film that might use this music as its soundtrack.
